The Muscle Nobody Talks About
You laugh at a friend's story and cross your legs. You sneeze in the car and say a small prayer. You eye the trampoline at your grandkid's party like it owes you money.
If that sounds familiar, you are in very good company. You're just in company nobody talks about.
Let's talk about it.
The muscle you can't see in the mirror
Your pelvic floor is a hammock of muscle at the base of your core. It holds up your bladder, uterus, and bowel, and it helps keep everything closed until you decide otherwise.
Like every other muscle, it changes with time. Pregnancy and childbirth stretch it. The drop in estrogen around menopause changes the tissue. Years of gravity, heavy lifting, and chronic coughing add up. So a sneeze, a laugh, or a jump puts pressure on a hammock that isn't pulling as tight as it used to. That's the "oops" moment.
That's not a character flaw. It's a muscle that got quieter. Same lesson I teach about collagen: you didn't fail. The scaffolding just needs some attention.
"Have you tried Kegels?"
Yes. We all have. In the car, at red lights, while pretending to listen on Zoom.
Kegels are good for you, and I'll never tell you to stop. The honest problem is that a lot of women aren't sure they're squeezing the right muscle, and almost nobody does them consistently. If Kegels were going to finish the job, they would have by now.
What Emsella actually does
Emsella is a chair. I'm serious. You sit on it, fully dressed, for about 28 minutes.
It uses HIFEM (high-intensity focused electromagnetic) energy, the same family of technology behind Emsculpt NEO, to make your pelvic floor muscles contract far more deeply than you could on your own. One session delivers thousands of those contractions. It's the workout your pelvic floor has been skipping, and you don't have to do a thing.
What it feels like: tingling and rhythmic pulsing. It's a little strange the first few minutes, then it's just Tuesday. No needles, no undressing, no downtime. You can drive yourself home, go back to work, or go to lunch. At BA you get a private room, your show on the TV, and your drink of choice. Fair trade.
Emsella is FDA-cleared to treat urinary incontinence in women and men. A typical plan here is a series of six sessions, two a week over about three weeks. Some clients notice a difference partway through. The full benefit builds over the series, and your plan is personal, so we'll talk about what's realistic for you.
Who it's for
- Women who leak a little when they laugh, cough, sneeze, jump, or lift
- Women who feel the "gotta go, gotta go" urge more than they'd like
- Moms, whether your babies are 2 or 32
- Women in perimenopause and beyond who feel like their core changed overnight
- Men too, including after prostate surgery
It's not for everyone. If you're pregnant, have a pacemaker, or have metal or electronic implants in the pelvic area (including a copper IUD), Emsella isn't the right fit. That's exactly why we start with a consultation.
If you read my Emsculpt NEO post...
In The Muscle You're Quietly Losing After 40, I talked about rebuilding the muscle under your midsection. Emsella is the same idea, aimed at the muscle under everything. Your core has a floor. It deserves the same respect as your abs. A lot of my clients do both, and I kind of love that.
Quick FAQ
Do I have to undress? No. You stay fully clothed the whole time.
Does it hurt? Most people describe it as tingling and strong pulsing, not pain. We adjust the intensity to you.
How long is a session? About 28 minutes. Sit down, settle in, and you're done.
Is there downtime? None. Go right back to your day.
How many sessions will I need? Most clients do a series of six, about two a week. We'll build your plan at your consult.
Is this only for women who've had babies? Not at all. Age, hormones, and life all affect the pelvic floor, babies or not.
Should I still talk to my doctor? Yes. If leaks are new, sudden, painful, or come with blood in your urine, see your doctor first. Emsella is a great tool, but it doesn't replace a medical workup.
Let's stop crossing our legs
You don't need to plan your day around where the bathrooms are. You don't need to skip the trampoline, the tennis match, or the belly laugh.
Book your complimentary consultation and we'll talk about it, frankly and privately, no blushing required.
