It's Not Just What's in the Bottle. It's Whether It Gets In.

Ourself Complexion Brightening Serum, Advanced Regenerative Serum and Daily Renewal Cream Rich at Beautiful Aesthetics in Frisco, TX

I have a drawer. You probably have one too. It's full of serums with gorgeous ingredient lists that did... not much. Pretty bottle. Big promises. Same face.

Here's what I wish someone had told me years ago: it's not just what's in the bottle. It's whether it gets where it needs to go.

Your skin doesn't slam the door on good ingredients. It just never answers.

That's not a flaw. That's your skin doing its job. The outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is built to keep things out. It's tightly packed skin cells sealed together with your skin's own natural fats, and it is picky. Small molecules can slip through. Big ones, like many peptides and hyaluronic acid, mostly sit on top. So a lot of beautiful ingredients spend their entire lives on the doorstep.

That's the exact problem Ourself was built to solve, and it's why I brought the line into Beautiful Aesthetics.

The science, in plain English

The delivery driver with the gate code

Picture your skin's surface as a gated neighborhood. Most skincare is a delivery driver who pulls up to the gate, drops every package on the curb, and leaves. A little blows in. Most doesn't. And whatever does get in shows up all at once.

Ourself's Tiered-Release Vesicle™ (TRV™) technology is the driver who has the gate code, knows which house ordered what, and has the truck loaded in tiers so each package comes off at the right stop.

Here's what's literally happening:

  • The truck: A TRV is a microscopic capsule built from many layers of fat-like molecules called phospholipids, stacked like the layers of an onion around a core of even tinier oil droplets. Ourself describes each capsule as having 18+ tiers. Active ingredients are packed into those layers and into the core.
  • The gate code: Those layers are similar enough to your skin's own natural fats that they blend right in. Published research on TRV reports that they temporarily rearrange the skin's surface fats into tiny channels that large molecules can pass through. The same research says those changes reverse once the product is removed, and that TRVs don't strip the barrier the way harsh solvents and detergents do.
  • The right door: The researchers found that adjusting the recipe changes how deep ingredients travel, so a formula can be aimed at the upper layer of skin (the epidermis) or deeper (the dermis).
  • The right time: "Tiered release" means ingredients held in different compartments come out at different rates. The TRV patent Ourself lists describes ingredients in the inner core releasing faster than the same ingredients held in the outer layers, and the layers protecting what's inside for more stable, sustained release.

This is the part that gets me excited. For years, if we wanted big molecules like hyaluronic acid deeper in the skin, the answer was a needle or an in-office device. Ourself's whole reason for existing is to do more of that work from the outside, every day, at your bathroom sink.

Is this real science or clever marketing?

Fair question. I asked it too.

The research behind TRV was published in Dermatologic Surgery, the official journal of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. In lab testing on donated human skin, TRV formulas carried a large peptide deeper than an advanced liposome formula, and carried hyaluronic acid in far better than a plain gel. A separate peer-reviewed paper on the Complexion Brightening Serum, in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, found evidence of tranexamic acid reaching the epidermis. Ourself was involved in both papers, so I read them the way I read everything: interested, and with my readers on.

Who's behind it

Ourself comes from the founders of Alastin Skincare, a name a lot of you know from pre- and post-procedure care. According to Ourself, co-founder Lauren Otsuki has spent more than 35 years building biotech companies, and co-founder Scott Glenn has founded more than 25 biotech companies and helped launch both SkinMedica and Alastin. The company is based in Carlsbad, California, and describes its team as biochemists, engineers, and physicians who set out to fix one thing: getting ingredients where they actually need to go.

What "regenerative" and "Intides" mean here

You'll see "regenerative" on the label. Ourself uses it for ingredients meant to support your skin's own repair work instead of just coating the surface: peptides that help signal skin to make collagen and elastin, plus hyaluronic acid support that helps skin make and hold onto its own HA. Intides™ is Ourself's name for its "Intelligent Peptides," and the patented MI9™ peptide in the brightening serum is one of them.

Three products, one delivery story

Complexion Brightening Serum ($189)

What it's delivering: Complexion Brightening Serum carries the patented MI9™ peptide, tranexamic acid (TXA), niacinamide, retinyl linoleate, 4-butylresorcinol, and a vitamin C derivative.

Why delivery matters: Dark spots start down where pigment cells make melanin. MI9™ is designed to sit on the pigment cell's receptor and block the "make more pigment" signal before it starts. It's a large molecule, too large to get through the skin's surface on its own, which is exactly why it rides in a TRV. Tranexamic acid is famously hard to push past the surface too, and Ourself's published research found evidence of it reaching the epidermis in this formula.

Who it's for: Sun spots, post-inflammatory marks, uneven tone, and anyone who wants brightening without hydroquinone.

How to use it: 1 to 2 pumps on clean skin, morning and night or as tolerated. Moisturizer after. Sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, every morning. (Ourself advises against using it if you are pregnant, lactating, or planning to become pregnant.)

Advanced Regenerative Serum ($230)

What it's delivering: Advanced Regenerative Serum packs two sizes of hyaluronic acid, two peptides that support collagen and elastin, stabilized vitamin C, and niacinamide into one serum. It used to be called HA+ Replenishing Serum.

Why delivery matters: Hyaluronic acid is a big molecule, and in most serums it mostly hydrates the surface. In the published TRV research, a formula carrying two sizes of HA got both into the skin, with the larger size staying more in the upper layers and the smaller one spreading deeper. The same research used these two peptides in their natural, unmodified form. Many cosmetic peptides get a fatty add-on to help them sneak in, and the researchers note that can change how they work. The TRV does the heavy lifting, so the peptide doesn't have to change its outfit to get in the door.

Ourself also ran a split-face study in women ages 44 to 71: this one serum on one side of the face, and a vitamin C serum, an HA serum, and a peptide serum on the other. Ourself reports that a blinded dermatologist graded the single-serum side as better in six of seven categories and tied in the seventh. One step instead of three. You know how I feel about a shorter routine.

Who it's for: Fine lines, crepey neck and chest, loss of firmness, dehydration, and dullness.

How to use it: After cleansing and Complexion Brightening Serum, apply 1 to 2 pumps to the face and a thin layer to the neck and décolleté, morning and night. Then moisturizer. Sunscreen last in the morning.

Daily Renewal Cream Rich ($85)

Honest note: Daily Renewal Cream Rich is not a TRV product. It's on the team for a different reason. Getting ingredients in is half the job. The other half is keeping your barrier healthy so skin stays comfortable, calm, and hydrated while the serums work. In delivery-driver terms, this is the one who locks up after the packages are inside.

What's in it: Intides™ peptides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, shea butter, and ginger root, carob fruit, and chlorella extracts.

Who it's for: Dry, mature, or moisture-depleted skin, cooler months, or anyone who wants a restorative evening cream. Ourself says it's designed to work alongside treatment regimens.

How to use it: Smooth 1 to 2 pumps over skin, morning and night, after your serums.

A simple AM / PM routine with all three

Morning

  1. Cleanse
  2. Complexion Brightening Serum
  3. Advanced Regenerative Serum
  4. Daily Renewal Cream Rich
  5. Broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30+

Night

  1. Cleanse
  2. Complexion Brightening Serum
  3. Advanced Regenerative Serum
  4. Daily Renewal Cream Rich

That order comes straight from how Ourself layers its regimen: brightening serum first, regenerative serum second, cream last. No twelve-step circus.

Why this matters at a Frisco medspa

Treatments like Hydrafacial, lasers, and microneedling do the big work in the treatment room. What you do at home decides how long it lasts. I chose Ourself because the whole brand is built on the same idea I use every day in the clinic: get the right thing to the right layer. The TRV researchers themselves suggest this kind of delivery may complement in-office procedures like laser resurfacing.

That's the difference with a professional-grade, medspa-curated line. I'm not handing you a bottle and wishing you luck. We look at your skin, your treatments, and your timeline, and I'll tell you when to use what around each appointment so your barrier stays happy.

Frequently asked questions

What is Tiered-Release Vesicle (TRV) technology?

TRV is Ourself's patented delivery system. Each vesicle is a microscopic, multi-layered capsule made of fat-like molecules (phospholipids) around a core of tiny oil droplets, with active ingredients packed into the layers and core. Published research reports that TRVs blend with the skin's natural surface fats and temporarily open tiny channels so large molecules like peptides and hyaluronic acid can get past the skin's outer barrier.

How is TRV different from a regular serum or liposome?

Most serums leave large molecules sitting on the surface. In published lab testing on human skin, TRV formulas carried a large peptide deeper than an advanced liposome formula and delivered hyaluronic acid far better than a plain gel. The formula can also be adjusted to aim ingredients at upper or deeper skin layers, and ingredients in different compartments release at different rates.

Which of the three Ourself products use TRV?

Complexion Brightening Serum and Advanced Regenerative Serum use TRV delivery. Daily Renewal Cream Rich is not a TRV product. Its job is barrier support and moisture, keeping skin comfortable and hydrated while the serums work.

In what order should I layer the Ourself products?

Cleanse, then Complexion Brightening Serum, then Advanced Regenerative Serum, then Daily Renewal Cream Rich, morning and night. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher.

Can I use Ourself with Hydrafacial, lasers, or microneedling?

Yes. That's a big reason I curated the line for the clinic. I'll tell you when to use each product around your treatments so your barrier stays happy.

Can I use Beauty Bank dollars on Ourself products?

Yes. The BA Beauty Bank Membership is $199 a month, and banked money can be used on any purchase, including products. Unused balance rolls over, there's no commitment, and you can cancel anytime.
